Scootle is used for educators to find resources relevant to their specific year and subject. It is used for educators to pick the appropriate activities they would like to apply in their classroom. It can then be placed in their subject folders to be used when needed.

Which subject or learning area would it be most appropriate to use in?

Scootle can be used for all subjects and learning areas as it is linked to the curriculum and has a large variety of teaching resources.

Identify the strengths of this teaching resource

Scootle is very easy to use and navigate around. As it is specifically an Australian teaching resource, the subjects and years are directly linked to the Australian curriculum. The resource explains how to use this resource, the purpose and how it aligns with the curriculum.

Identify any weaknesses of this teaching resource

There is so much information in this teaching resource and all relevant to the curriculum it will be easy to overload.

Explain any ideas you may have for further use of this teaching resource

Saving the resources in the folders will allow for teachers to reuse the resource the following year. This will also advantage the teacher as they have used it before and can adjust the resource to make it better. It can also be used to collaborate with other educators and get feedback.

The teaching resource, Pinterest can be used for the teachers to gather information to create lesson plans for their specific subject and year. Teachers can collaborate with other educators to evaluate the pins and discuss the effectiveness of the lesson plan.

Which subject or learning area would it be most appropriate to use in?

Pinterest has resources that can relate to all searches. It has numerous activities, worksheets, computer activities and games. This resource is great for all subjects and learning areas.

Identify the strengths of this teaching resource

Pinterest allow teachers to gather and share ideas online and can collaborate with people of the same interest. In this teaching resource educators can create multiple pin boards. This allows them to create a pin board for each subject, which will assist the teachers in creating lesson plans. Pinterest search tool allows the user to connect with people of similar interest (teachers) through this program (DeNeen, 2015). This allows educators to connect and collaborate globally.

Identify any weaknesses of this teaching resource

As there is so much information and resources on pinterest it has potential to become overcrowded and disorganised. Pinning resources on the board to evaluate later can cause overboard of useless or irrelevant information.

Explain any ideas you may have for further use of this teaching resource

Using with teacher supervision I can see pinterest as a resource for students to gather ideas on projects, DIYs, classroom decorations, creative ideas and research.

Digital Fluency

In this blog I will be discussing what is digital fluency, why is it so important and why do we need our children to be digitally fluent. Ironic side of it all is that this will be written by a digital immigrant, me!

Working in the hospitality industry for the past eight years I’ve had no need for technology. Searching for career opportunities, I have realised that the constant evolution of technology has businesses in high demand of digital literate employees.

Digital fluency is the ability to function technology devices comfortably with ease. Being digital fluent allows the individual to “effectively and ethically interpret information, discover meaning, design content, construct knowledge, and communicate ideas in a digitally connected world” (Boston State University, 2015, par. 1). This means acquiring the skills to  navigate through the digital world in all aspects comfortably.

Getting started in the digital world has been daunting as it is all unfamiliar to me. I feel over the weeks of studying, numerous YouTube videos and google search, I have begun to develop a positive aptitude towards the use of technology.

Looking for jobs I have I have witnessed the need of digital skills to apply. With technology evolving at a fast pace there is pressure through the educational stakeholders to incorporate digital fluency into the Australian Curriculum.  Howell (2012) explains that the educationalists believe the skills of digital competence are in demand and required in the Australian workforce therefore education should parallel with the necessary skills required for future employment opportunities.  The education system has standard requirements in place to monitor student’s digital skills that will prepare them for “lifelong learning” (Howell, 2012). As I’m studying to be a primary teacher there is pressure to acquire a digital pedagogy to meet the demands and needs of the educational stakeholders. Schools needs to prepare students to be successful in the future. This article outlines Digital fluency: skills necessary for learning in the digital age.

Transmedia

I have only recently heard the word transmedia a few weeks ago. After googling, and watching numerous YouTube on transmedia, I understand the power of transmedia. The technology can be defined as storytelling or creating a storytale, using multiple platforms to grasp the interest of the consumers. Platforms meaning “types of media content that can be consumed by audiences” such as movies, television episodes, books, comics, novels, video games or even social media (Bain, Jensen, Sangruengkit, Silman & Zi, n.d). It is intriguing, suspenseful, and captives the audiences for wanting, and in someways needing more.

Transmedia is a tool which can be utilised in the marketing side of business. Here is a successful interactive transmedia story on Jay-Z’s release of his new autobiography Decoded.

This tool allowed me understand how Avatar, Pirates of the Caribbean and Transformers became so popular. These movies have released multiple movies, books, comics, video games and merchandise. Jenkins (2007) explains that transmedia targets the diverse population by providing different points of entry for the consumer. This allows the movie to attract a broader audience which will increase the popularity.

Studying to be a teacher I can see the potential of this tool to further their skills using digital devices. This could allow the students to be creative with ways they are going to present their stories, work in groups to collaborate, learning multiple digital devices and self learning through google and the web. It can also be used as a teaching resource, a way to grab the student’s interest with segments of different platforms through learning. In the classroom, Transmedia can be used to engage the students on the platforms they are familiar with and eager to learn from.

What is a digital world?

With the words digital world, I automatically visualise New Yorkny. Big screens everywhere, constant advertising, lights flashing, basically a very busy world full of screens. Although in other parts of the world, screens are not plastered all over buildings, technology is a big part of our lives. Technology has changed the way we think, work and play. This is the world the children are growing up in. We live in a world that is reliant on computers and devices to complete our day to day tasks. The current generation are even considered ‘digital natives’ due to their reliance and use of the the internet and digital devices (Howell, 2012). Digital technology allows me to stay connected, have access to resources, videos, write journals, check the weather, keep up to date with sports and the list goes on and on.

Studying to be a primary teacher I was amazed as how much technology has evolved the way that lesson plans are taught and learnt. There is so much potential in educating the students on different platforms on a level they are eager to learn from (Prensky, 2008). Instead of the traditional teacher – students structure(teachers being in control of the learning environment and leading the learning), technology has changed the dynamics of a classroom. Teachers now have the role of “co-collaborator or eModerator” (Howell, 2012), they assist the students to guide their own learning using technology devices. It is important for the teachers to understand the digital devices in order apply the technology appropriately in class. Howell (2012, p.5) explains the relevance of teachers gaining a “digital pedagogy“: “to understand how to use technology effectively, understand the learning theories behind the practice and how to select the right technology for the learning outcome they seek”. To maximise the learning using digital devices, educators need to keep up to date with the evolving technology to educate the students on a platform they can relate to. The digital world is constantly evolving and part of all aspects of our lives. Could this be our  future?
